The Starbucks at 2345 State Road 16 near Interstate 95 in St. Augustine closed Saturday, Sept. 26, after 11 years in business.

The location was one of nine Florida stores shuttered as part of a nationwide restructuring that will eliminate about 250 Starbucks locations across North America. St. Johns Citizen first reported the local closure. Starbucks said affected employees would be offered transfers to other stores when possible.

Closure is part of 'Back to Starbucks' plan

Mike Grams, Starbucks' chief operating officer, announced the closures in a Sept. 24 letter to employees, calling them part of the company's "Back to Starbucks" strategy. CNBC reported that Grams wrote the company had identified locations that could not consistently meet customer and employee experience standards or reach acceptable financial performance.

The 250 closures represent about 1% of Starbucks' more than 18,000 North American locations. The company expects to spend about $300 million on the restructuring, including roughly $200 million in cash costs for lease exits and severance packages. The remaining $100 million covers noncash charges for writing down store assets.

The round marks the second major wave of closures under CEO Brian Niccol. Starbucks announced hundreds of store closures and 900 nonretail job cuts in September 2025, according to Daily Coffee News.

Closures reach from Aventura to Tallahassee

Eight other Florida Starbucks locations closed in the same round, in Aventura, Fort Myers, Longwood, Melbourne, Oviedo, Sarasota, Tallahassee and West Palm Beach. As of Sept. 25, Florida had 946 Starbucks locations, the third most of any state, according to data compiled by ScrapeHero and reported by Florida Today.

Second chain to leave State Road 16 this month

The Starbucks closure came eight days after Dick's Wings & Grill shut its State Road 16 restaurant Friday, Sept. 18, according to St. Johns Citizen. A handwritten note on the restaurant's door attributed that closure to the owner's family relocating. The Dick's Wings Nocatee location also closed earlier in 2026.

The two closures had different causes: The Dick's Wings closure was attributed to a family move, while the Starbucks closure was part of a corporate restructuring.

Starbucks has not announced plans for the property.
