St. Johns County Sheriff Robert Hardwick and the county's zero-homicide year became an $800 clue on Jeopardy! Thursday, Aug. 27.

The clue, which aired in the "U.S. Counties" category, read: "Congrats to Robert Hardwick in this job for St. Johns County, Florida: Population north of 300,000, murders in 2025: 0." The correct response: "What is a sheriff?"

The national spotlight traces back to a milestone the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office confirmed in January. St. Johns County recorded zero criminal homicides in all of 2025, a figure that holds under Florida's legal definition of the crime as "the unlawful killing of another human being." Among more than 100 U.S. counties with populations above 300,000, St. Johns appears to be the only one to achieve that mark, according to a review by The St. Johns Citizen, which first reported the story.

The Citizen held the story until after Dec. 31, 2025, then confirmed the final figure with the Sheriff's Office before publishing its exclusive in January 2026. The milestone drew coverage from the New York Post, Fox News and other national outlets before reaching the game show's blue board.

Sheriff Hardwick addressed the achievement cautiously when he spoke to The Citizen in January. "Sometimes you whisper accomplishments because you don't want to take them for granted," he said. "We're truly blessed."

Hardwick attributed the record to a combination of policing strategy, community cooperation and sustained county investment. He credited county commissioners and the county administrator for funding training, equipment and competitive deputy pay.

He also pointed to technology-driven enforcement, including a real-time intelligence center and license plate readers on Interstate 95, as part of the agency's approach.

Still, Hardwick cautioned against reading too much into any single factor. He told The Citizen in January that the year involved "a lot of variables" and that the agency does not take the result for granted.

St. Johns County is home to more than 300,000 residents and ranks among Florida's fastest-growing areas. Hardwick recalled the 1990s, when domestic-violence homicides ran high in the county, as a reminder of how quickly conditions can shift.
